About us aka, who is behind this madness
Circuits.io was founded in 2012 by Karel Bruneel and Benjamin Schrauwen. After struggling for years to design and teach to design electronics using existing EDA tool, they felt that electronics design needed an urgent jolt. Learning from how software is designed, they came up with the following magic recipe which is at the heart of circuits.io: (i) allow to easily build on pre-designed electronics modules, (ii) use intuitive tools that hide much of the complexity in software, and (iii) embrace the open hardware movement. Furthermore, we will soon allow easy PCB ordering right from circuits.io, no more messing with Gerber files. We promise that circuits.io will always be free for open hardware designs and that you can export all your designs, we will never lock in what actually is yours.
Karel is a CAD expert, a notorious tinkerer, co-founded Dwengo and is a post-doc at Ghent university. He went from blowing up capacitors as a kid, studying electronics engineering, to getting a Ph.D on FPGA CAD tools from Ghent University, where he still part-time guides a small group of Ph.D. students. When not hacking on circuits.io, he loves to ride his racing bike over the famous cobble stone hills of Flanders or ride some waves in a Batman costume. You can follow Karel on Twitter.
Benjamin is an entrepreneur and professor at Ghent University. He previously co-founded Mollom, a web spam filtering service acquired by Acquia, and at university he is running a large research lab focused on machine learning and robotics. His first computer was an Apple II, has been tinkering with electronics ever since he was able to hold a soldering iron, and as a baby even went to bed with a screwdriver :) He studied computer science at the University of Antwerp and went on to get an engineering degree and a Ph.D. at Ghent University. On the few sunny days here in Belgium, Benjamin goes climbing or paragliding. He also has a keen interest in electronic music and all machines generating it. You can follow Ben on Twitter.
